Formed as “The Struggle Within” in 2001, we came together more as a group of friends from college who wanted to jam together, than as a collective of musicians out to form a band. A year or so into active participation in the music circuit, and we quickly realized that we wanted more out of our music and to express ourselves through our music completely, we needed to find our own niche. Out went the old name and with it, the “Maiden/Metallica/Megadeth” worship. Reforming as “Alter Ego” in 2002, we spent 2-3 years on the competition circuit, at the IITs and the Pilanis, honing our chops and fixing our “sound”. Combine the aggression of contemporary metal with the hooks and “pop” sensibilities of 90s rock, throw in a humongous dollop of funk, unconventional song structures, all fused with heavy doses of humour and a blatant disregard for conformity, and you have the Alter Ego sound. Bands like Rage against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice in Chains, Black Sabbath, Pearl Jam, Incubus, Soundgarden and Pantera, among others, heavily influence the way we think, feel and compose our music. Originality is something that is very important to us, and though we enjoy playing the few covers that we do, we’ve always been more interested in presenting original material to audiences. With generic constraints thrown out of the window, our main motivation has always been to create music from the heart, with no compromises, no expectations and to never forget the reason we got together to play, which was just to enjoy ourselves while making music.
