Seriously? Annoying fanboys counts as a criticism of the band now'? Well then you might as well pack up the metal subforum, cuz more than half of the metalheads in our country can't even type a sentence without betraying their total lack of brains.

Tool sells music. The image has built around them, but they don't really put a lot of effort into marketing that image. But even if they did, name one band that doesn't. In fact, compared to a lot of other bands I know, their image is at least rooted in reality and relevant to their music.

Sure. If their image was so rooted in their music, why is it that they need those gimmicks to sell their shit? Hell, even SlipKnot used gimmicks but damn they wrote a good song here and there. Admit it, most Tool fans are like SlipKnot fans. Maybe worse.

Lemme tell you what Tool is. AVERAGE music meets hipster image. BIG bucks. Good individual musicians in there, but band fails.

^^There's a huge difference between a band having an image and using gimmicks. EVERY band has an image, and I can't think of a single artist that doesn't try and have some amount of control over their image. Name one who doesn't. That's very different from cheap gimmicks to sell your cds. And please, t00l fans are a lot smarter than Nickelback fans. When was the last time you met a slipknot fan who didn't write in fail l33tsp34k?

Tool is a great band, but music taste in itself is subjective. It's okay to not like their music I guess. But you're looking at a set of vocal fanboys and severely overestimating how much of that image the band actually tries to create, and also how much of that most fans actually buy into. Sure, as a new fan you go for all of it, but if you actually like the music instead of the hype, you will notice there's a lot of really good music in there, apart from all the psuedo-mystical shit that the fans take a lot more seriously than the band itself.

Also, I think we both agree that black metal is exempt from that last argument I just made.
