Battle Hymns - re-recorded - Manowar Forget depressive (for the record I hate the word depressive. It sounds just plain stupid) black metal and emo and leonard cohen and the cure. This is one of the most depressing albums ever recorded. It's like less of an album and more of a testament to the futility of nostalgia and how pointless revisiting the past is. It's also a sign that Manowar are TOTALLY out of ideas something that was amply demonstrated by the turdlike Gods of War, an irredeemably boring album with tons of spoken word bullshit, orchestral farting and very little actual metal.
To be fair, Eric Adams still has a pretty good voice, but this album proves just how much it has deteriorated over the last 30 years or so. Terrible and unnecessary. Kinda like the holocaust.

Yngwie - Relentless: Malmsteen needs to a) Fire Ripper Owens b) Get someone else who has actual ideas to help him with songwriting c) Get a good keyboard player/bassist d) Stop putting out albums if he can't do all of the above. This is ridiculously bad. Just like the last one with Ripper.

Yeah this release totally stinks. They should've left well enough alone. I don't understand why bands think it's a good idea to re-record their classic albums.

Actually Ripper isn't part of Malmsteen's band yet. He's just a hired gun. In his interviews he even states that he has no idea whether the album would be released with his vocals on them or whether there would be vocals on the album at all. And Malmsteen is an ego maniac. He never lets anyone help with songwriting. Check out Jeff Scott Soto's latest interview. It's a brilliant eye opener. Either way Malmsteen hasn't released anything good in ages.

Heard some local band called Slain who do prog-rock/metal stuck somewhere in the early to mid-90s. In spite of being very good musicians - the guitarist in particular is very impressive - this is one of the most boring set of songs ever committed to disc. This recording is also a textbook case of how keyboards can totally fag up a band's sound. Throw in some joyous god bothering lyrics (i actually laughed out loud at the part where they go on about how God will love you and it don't matter if you are black or white) and you have quite a disaster. If the guitarist ever cuts a solo album though, I'd be really interested in hearing how that turns out.

Alex Masi - Theory Of Everything: Thanks Trollkien for the recco. I'm not a huge fan of shreds, or guitar driven solo albums. But Masi manages to pull in the passive listener and make him dance around his finger tips. Brilliant album.
Anvil - Worth The Weight: Metal at its funnest. Standard solid Anvil album, and watch out for Bushpig.
Daath - Daath: Nothing special about it. Loads of riffs, everything sounds great, but feel hi nahin hai.
Inquisition - Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm: The love it got here made me check it out. TrOO black metal, but not the black metal album of the year for me. That still goes to 1349's Demonoir.
The Sword - Gods Of The Earth: Woozy. I preferred this to Warp Riders.
