Some one needs to tell me ASAP if its possible to get back stuff I permanently deleted?

How did you manage to do that? It's not like the delete key permanently deletes shit. Did you use Shift+delete? Anyway what kind of data was it?

I suspect even Crysis doesn't benefit from a 2GB card.

Crysis does slightly benefit from a 2gigs card, but only when you're gunning for that kind of resolution. It completely skipped my mind that Ram was looking for a laptop, and improving resolution wouldn't really be a priority. I have a friend who has a 2gigs card simply because he likes to hook it up with his big screen.

@Andrita: yes, there is a software that recovers a large amount of your data. Make sure you don't save any files for now. I forgot its name. I think it was from Seagate.

Well I got a MSI netbook a while back. This was, I thought, a good deal for the purpose its going to be used for - to watch movies while traveling and to type in interviews as they happen. It's got a 250 GB hard drive, 1 gig of RAM and an Intel N450 processor. They've also thrown in a ebcam WiFi and Bluetooth. It is very very effective at what it does and at close to 6 hours, has a fairly pleasing battery life. Once I load heroes of might and magic 3 on this, it's going to become my constant travel companion.

^ How much did that config cost you? And does it heat up real quick? A friend here has an MSI laptop and the laptop heats up like a lap-burning motherfucker. Is that the case with the netbook?

It cost me 14.5K. Not bad at all. Can't say I've noticed it heating up too much. But then I've never actually used it on my lap.

Alright ! some very useful info in here...Thanks chaps ! :)

After a lot of research (pestering my techie friends), I have shortlisted the three following laptops, based on my needs, the specs and my budget:

1. Dell XPS 15
2. HP Envy 14-1110NR
3. Samsung QX410-J01

Comments ?

I haven't read the entire thread but here are my 2 cents:

do not and I repeat DO NOT get the XPS 15 unless you wanna buy a new battery in a year. I had that and the battery dies just after a month of the battery warranty getting over so I had to buy a new one and then the laptop started giving problems but that was under extended warranty so Dell replaced the motherboard. Still some issues were there so they decided to give me a new Studio XPS instead :D

Samsung I believe is pretty good. I know two people using that model and they both are pretty happy except for the mouse which is either very sensitive or not at all and makes an irritating click sound everytime.

Graphics cards with 2GB RAM are rare and certainly fall in the ultra high end (read Rs 30,000 to 40,000) range. So far, I have seen only dual GPU cards outfitted with 2GB VRAM. Remember, RAM boosts performance only up to a certain degree, because that way more detail can be added to the framebuffer and it reduces clogging of the PCI-E lanes. There's no use getting 2GB of VRAM, when a game can only push 800MB of precached memory assets. The only reason why there's a difference between the 768MB and 1GB versions of the GTX460 graphics cards is because the 768MB one has lesser ROPs and shader units. In fact, if you're an entry level gamer, it actually makes sense to go for the 512MB ATi Radeon HD5670 instead of the 1GB HD5670, which adds no performance benefit with the expensive VRAM.

Can it be? Can it really be? Sniper sir is out of touch???

No, you've just fallen hook, line, and sinker to marketing bullshit. You should've looked up GT435M before jumping to that conclusion. I'll spare you the technical jargon and explain it in simple English. The GT435M is a mobility chipset. Mobility chipsets are castrated counterparts of desktop graphics chipsets, which are geared more towards power conservation than any semblance of performance. The GT435M itself is a halved Fermi with a pitifully low shader count and ROPs.

Sorry, there I go with the jargon again. In simple terms the GT435M with 2GB VRAM is only as fast as a Mobility Radeon HD5650, which has only 1GB VRAM FYI. So much for the extra 1GB VRAM. The Mobility Radeon HD5650 in turn is extremely slow compared to the desktop HD5650. Just so you know that the desktop HD5650 is mainly used as an HTPC card, that is a glorified video playback device and NOT a gaming card. It is a cripple compared to the desktop HD5670, which is an entry level gaming card. Did I mention that the HD5670 cannot run the latest games at the lowest settings?

So let's see what we have got here. A piss poor entry level HD5670 with 512MB RAM (which, mind you, is a quarter of your 2GB wonderboy) is faster than the desktop HD5650, which is faster than the Mobility HD5650 (1GB), which is only as good as your 3GB GT435M. Do you see what I mean here? The GT435 with 2GB VRAM is a joke considering the RAM modules themselves are DDR3 (DDR5 being the current standard) isn't helped by a painfully low 128-bit memory bus. In simple terms, it's like an asthmatic using a 6" PVC pipe to drink thick Punjabi lassi. In simple terms, utterly retarded.

A Rs. 2000 Radeon 5 series HTPC card with 512MB VRAM will rip the GT435M a new one. The only reason why they gave the GT435M 2GB VRAM is because n00bs like you will cream their panties when they look at the spec sheet and buy the product it's shoved into. In short, fuck the specs and go for real world game benchmarks. That's the only way you can tell the true worth of any number crunching device.
