Black Pit of Dr. M aka Misterios de Ultratumba was an atmospheric B&W horror loosely in the Poe tradition. A doctor wanting to know what lies beyond death compels his dying colleague to arrange for him to have an "afterlife" experience, with tragic consequences. Melodramatic and cheesy in parts, but in a good way, with strong shadowy visuals and clever understated camera tricks, like a predecessor to the classics of Mario Bava.

Tried to watch it, don't think I even made it half way through.

Do not see Dhobi Ghat if you live in India ON A WEEKEND. There will be 10000 people there who will not appreciate even .1% of what is there in it and will end up chatting out loud and acting like total assholes. Awesome movie, ruined by the bastards sitting next to me. It was like playing jazz to fucking snoop dog fans.

Fitzcarraldo
I can't believe this movie is 2 1/2 hours long. I didn't look at my watch once through the running and there wasn't a single wasted moment. Fucking awesome too, even if the idea of Klaus Kinski as an Irishman that can charm his wife into willingly parting with huge sums of money for a crazy venture is laughable.

Les Diaboliques - decent old-skool thriller, but too dependent on all manner of coincidence and the plot twist is telegraphed way in advance. Not a must-see.

Battle Royale
First half was pretty meh for me, but the dramatic tension improved greatly in the second half and some scenes were awesome. I still prefer Yakuza Graveyard, among the (very few) movies I've seen by that director.

@Bhanuj - I wasn't actually being serious with the Slumdog remark. I do not have any interest in wasting an more of my time with Trainspotting (the movie, that is) related matters than I already did back whenever. I'll bum the book from you sometime.

It saddens me that there are people out there who cannot take something like Scott Pilgrim at its face value for what its worth - an hour and a half of goof-off fun.
I certainly enjoyed the movie enough. Sure, the ending was too predictable and Michael Cera is annoying (which, seriously, barring Arrested Development, when has he NOT been?) but overall the movie is just a damn enjoyable chucklefest.

@Trollkien - I managed to finally watch Gruz 200 a couple of weeks back and holy shit, this Aleksey Balabanov dude is just straight-up messed in the head, isn't he? Makes for some good viewing, though. The utter nonchalance of the mother character was just completely unsettling, heh. Having said that, I found Of Freaks and Men more disturbing than this, though.

Also halfway through Antarctic Journal. The movie is painfully sno..err, slow for the most part but I'm going to persist and try to finish this tonight.

Yeah, you should definitely read the book. It's a pretty different experience.
